If you are in danger, call 911. Otherwise, call 988.

If there is danger to the loved one or anyone else, call 911.

If you are in danger, leave and go to a safe place.

Tell 911 "This is a mental health emergency." Repeat as necessary.

Ask for a CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) trained officer. In your area, this might be called a CART (Crisis Assessment Response Team) or crisis mobile team.

Meet the crisis team outside. Repeat again "This is a mental health emergency".

Explain the situation and follow crisis team directions.

Be aware they may ask you to be away from your loved one while they talk.

The crisis team will try to de-escalate. They will leave your loved one with you.

The crisis team may determine if a Chapter 51 emergency detention is needed. This hold is 24 hours in Milwaukee County and 72 hours for the rest of the state.

If there is a crisis but not emninent danger, call, text, or chat 988.

This is the crisis and suicide hotline. In Milwaukee County, call (414) 257-7222.

Family member or loved one can make the call. You will speak to a real person.

Explain what you are calling about.

Stay on the line as long as you need. They won't hang up on you.

If things get resolved, end the call.

988 may recommend other services.

In a few cases, 988 may transfer the call to county crisis or social services.
